Respiratory Protection
Disposable masks and respirators must be carefully selected to match each respiratory hazard. One-strap disposable masks are not OSHA approved and do not provide respiratory protection in any situation. A respirator must fit your face properly and have two straps to provide adequate respiratory protection. Call NYCAMH to obtain the correct respiratory protection.

Disposable Respirators
These respirators are approved for protection against harmful dusts and should not be used for other purposes. They will not provide protection from paint vapors or pesticides.

Half-face and Full
The purpose of a respirator is to prevent the inhalation of harmful airborne substances. Handling of pesticides, for instance, requires more protection then disposable masks can provide. A half-face or full-face respirator with replaceable organic vapor cartridges and pesticides prefilters is required. OSHA requires that before a respirator is used or purchased, a fit test with the same make, model, style and size of the respirator be performed.
NYCAMH can provide services for proper fit, use, limitations and maintenance of respirators and cartridges, or we can connect you with a similar facility closer to you for these services. Half-face and full-Face respirators or disposable cartridges need to be special-ordered. Contact us for additional respirator information.
