Overview
On fishing vessels, winches are used to wind in, or wind out fishing lines constantly. Winch entanglements, or people getting caught in lines, on fishing vessels are frequent and often result in fatalities. The fatality rates in the northeast fisheries exceed all other regions in the United States. Fishermen work in close proximity to the operating winch, yet most vessels do not have emergency shutoffs or proper machine guarding methods.
